I have heard that due to the lead content of 12l14, it may soon be banned in manufacturing in the u.s. Yes, the 12l14 and 11 series steels are more machinable because of the lead in the leaded steels, but also the sulphur as mentioned above. On everything for a 9 min.
12l14 is leaded, rephosphorylized and resulfurized steel which makes it free machining, but it only has 0.14%.
12l14 is almost as soft as aluminum on a carbide cutter, so if it's chipping out, somethings way off. It was case hardened, though i'm. Has anyone heard of or used a good alternative? We only use 1018 and 12l14 to make our products and sometimes 4140 to make tools.
I have a small lathe, 24 between centres. We ran a 12l14 with turning, milling, tapping that was set to the max. Typically, you need a bit of carbon to get hardness with heat treat. The first number (10,11,12) refers.
